Medicare Fraud Arrests – What’s Being Done for the Future

Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 25-06-2009

Nobody likes fraud, and good to see the law catch up with those that make it difficult for others.  The one item that is finally mentioned here is not having update computer systems to track some of this or prevent it in the first place.  One particular story from last year was the fraud committed by billing with doctors credentials that are dead, obvious crime all the way around.

Former Health Insurance Insider to Testify Before Senate Commerce Committee

Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 24-06-2009

This is good timing for the testimony.  We all remembered hearing the testimonies captured in Sicko with one of the same healthcare insurers.  Since he is no longer employed and has some long tenure there could be a lot of information offered here.  I dont know how much more we need to hear and see as its almost daily news but hopefully efforts to bring some real transparency will work.  BD

Some of the items mentioned below are just items we do every day, like speech recognition and digital imaging.  Hats off if this process helps bring some new life and intelligence to our leaders who seem to be so far behind the times.  Maybe next visit there can be some Health IT information shared.  It certainly cant hurt after what I saw in January on the internet with a committee that had never seen an electronic medical record and had no idea of what a personal health record was, maybe the next agenda?  BD

Medical records in Garbage Truck and Landfill – Baptist Medical Center in Alabama

Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 23-06-2009

One more story of not disposing medical records according to HIPAA standards.  It seems between reporting the data issues and paper issues, the paper breaches seem to be winning with more paper being found.  The hospital stated they used a 3rd party company to dispose of the records and when they looked further, there were records from up to 5 hospitals in the landfill.  First the records were in the garbage truck and then further on to the dump.  Last week we had Blue Cross shipping a box of medical records to a woman in Florida.

Thanks to the paper for publishing content from the blog!  With this post in particular, I had also added a couple resources for both doctors and patients, first of all Share Medical Space which is a service to help physicians find and list shared medical office space, and secondly, The No Insurance Club which was an interview I did with the owners and is a service to help both physicians and patients establish services and affordable payments for general healthcare maintenance.
