Cancer Vaccines – Harnessing a Patient’s Own Immune System to Fight the Disease by Sensitizing Dendritic Cells From Our Blood
Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 29-11-2009
There are many companies working with this type of formulation, instead of giving our body an element to fight cancer, the drugs such as Dendreon, now submitted to the FDA are the targets and could in time become a vaccine with adjusting how our cells react and use this to target the growth of tumors and cancer cells. On the other side of the coin the company Dendreon experienced quite a soap opera of history with its development and investors over a 2-3 year period.

More Evidence for Suppression of Research: the Case of Lamictal for Depression
Filed Under (Health Care) by Admin on 28-11-2009
We recently discussed the severe challenges to evidence-based medicine presented by manipulation and suppression of clinical research to serve vested interests. I recently (and unfortunately belatedly) came upon yet another example of suppression of research that was unfavorable to a research sponsor’s vested interests, suggesting that such suppression may be more prevalent than heretofore believed.

What is the "Worst Biotech CEO" Worth?
Filed Under (Health Care) by Admin on 27-11-2009
Recently, we posted about misadventures of the leadership of biotechnology giant Genzyme. Although the company has long priced its drug Cerezyme for the rare Gaucher’s disease at a stratospheric level, it did not sufficiently reinvest money in its manufacturing facility for the drug. Deferred maintenance at a production facility running at maximum capacity has apparently lead to two different kinds of contamination problems, forcing a shut-down of the plant, and now a shortage of the drug. For this, Genzyme CEO Henri Termeer was just labeled the “Worst Biotech CEO of ‘09″ by TheStreet.com.

ALARMS IN NURSING HOMES DO NOT WORK IF THERE IS NO ONE TO HEAR THEM
Filed Under (Legal Medical) by Admin on 26-11-2009
I have heard many a family member say that the nursing home personnel promised dad or mom couldn’t get out of bed (or out of the facility) without activating the emergency alarms…only to later find out the nursing home was so understaffed that no one was available to hear the alarm or respond to it.

Filed Under (Legal Medical) by Admin on 25-11-2009
Danville Regional Medical Center (DRMC) was purchased by Nashville, TN based Lifepoint Hospitals, Inc. in 2005.and problems soon followed. The first couple of years brought about a number of changes at the management level, including the departure of four hospital CEOs in just a short time. More importantly for hospital patients, DRMC was Virginias only hospital to receive a preliminary withdrawal of accreditation status by the Joint Commission.

Dodge Is Using Microsoft Tags To Give Away Prizes – Why Can’t the FDA Use the Same Technology for Medical Device Information And Save Lives?
Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 25-11-2009
If you are a regular reader of this blog you know I have suggested this before and even sent it off to the FDA without a response, well so much for
those contact us pages I guess. Its more important it seems to have a chance to win a prize than maybe save a life? I am not discounting this at all and think it is neat, but when I see something this simple that can save lives I get a little frustrated you might say as everything seems to revolve around entertainment first. We need entertainment by all means, certainly, but some technologies can do both! Just read the story at the link below about the man who died as he was implanted with a device that had been recalled and the hospital still had it on the shelf and nobody knew. With this, scan the package of the device and get the latest safety or recall information, with a phone no less, no special equipment required. It could have have saved that mans life.
