No Free Speech for Comparative Effectiveness Researchers?

We have repeatedly argued why comparative effectiveness research, under ideal circumstances, would be a good idea.  As I said before:

Battery Replacement Surgery Versus the Insurance Scoring Algorithms – Law Suit

Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 24-11-2009

This is somewhat interesting as the algorithms calculated here went past the marks allowed for the patients healthcare coverage.  She had the original implant in 2005, batteries replaced in 2007 and now needs them again.  Blue Cross paid for the other 2 surgeries and now calls this one experimental?  If they paid once for batteries how can it be experimental?

PRESSUE ULCERS AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Filed Under (Legal Medical) by Admin on 24-11-2009

It never ceases to amaze me when family members are told that there husband, wife, mother, father, etc. have a little “pressure sore” on their backsides or legs/feet and that it is being taken care of with a little cream and a bandage. The description given to the family makes it sound like their loved one is suffering from a mosquito bite! To the contrary, these skin wounds are serious medical problems.

MyPHR – Website that Explains and Answers Questions and Why You Need One Today and Tomorrow

Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 23-11-2009

I get into conversations quite frequently about this and it is amazing that I still walk into doctors offices, hospitals and chat with individuals and they imagehave never heard of a PHR, personal health record.  One time I was trying to explain what it was to staff members and the physician thought I was having general conversation, well, and he was a non participant in technology so somewhat of an expected response.  I mention these things as this is what happens in the real world outside of this blog and the internet, which exemplifies a real big need for training and information.

Dr. Oz Speaks about Mammograms and Breast Examinations

Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 22-11-2009

Dr. Oz makes a good point here in the fact that he disagrees with doctors not advising patients to conduct their own self exam and I agree with that as well, after all you know your body more than anyone else.  He thinks the debate will continue and states we are looking at exposure and diagnosis together as a package, with results and numbers analyzed.  Overall we still dont have a clear answer image to mammograms and I predict this will go on for a while just as is the PSA testing for men.  Myself I believe in doing self exams as one I found resulted in removal and lucky it was benign.  My feeling were though if it is in there, get it out now.  BD

Security with Health IT Pretty Sketchy at Some Hospitals and Doctor’s Offices

Filed Under (The Medical) by Admin on 21-11-2009

This is one I have seen first hand as a vendor at hospitals, walking in and seeing stuff like Lime Wire on hospital PCs.   It makes you think why in the world would an IS manager bring a computer into the active directory access without placing the unit under group policy, yes have seen that and even just as a vendor I removed LimeWire and figured I would deal with any anger later when I told the IS department what I did, and actually they should be thankful for the act.  image I have seen computers on medical networks with not anti virus protection too, again another slip on someones part.  Some hospitals too still allow doctors to bring in USB flash drives too, which again is asking for trouble.
